Panthera Snore Guard Fitting in Covington, KY
A Panthera snore guard in Covington, KY is a custom made oral appliance that you wear at night to reduce snoring. It holds your lower jaw slightly forward, which carries the base of the tongue forward with it and keeps the airway behind it open. The Panthera devices are mandibular advancement devices, 3D printed for your mouth alone from medical grade nylon, with no metal parts, and they are cleared by the FDA for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Barry Dean Applegate, DMD has worked inside the mouth, jaw and airway in Covington since 1993, and he fits the appliance himself. We see snore guard patients from Covington, Newport, Bellevue and Fort Thomas, across Kenton County, and from Cincinnati.

The Challenge
When the Snoring Has Become Somebody Else's Problem Too
A noise you cannot hear yourself
You are the last person in the house to know. Your partner has worked out which side of the bed is quieter, then which room, and the jokes at breakfast have stopped being jokes. You wake with a dry mouth and a throat that feels scraped, and seven hours in bed never adds up to seven hours of rest. By now you have probably tried the strips, the sprays, the wedge pillow and the app that records you, and the room is no quieter than it was.
Snoring is a noise made by soft tissue vibrating as air squeezes past it. When you fall asleep the muscles that hold your airway open relax, the lower jaw drops back, the tongue follows it, and the space behind the tongue narrows. Air moving through a narrower space moves faster, and faster air makes the tissue flutter. A snore guard works on the mechanical cause of that, by holding the jaw where it does not fall back. If you want the full picture of what drives it, read our page on snoring.
Understanding Your Treatment
What Is a Panthera Snore Guard?
A mandibular advancement device, made for one mouth
A Panthera snore guard is a custom mandibular advancement device, which is the clinical name for an oral appliance that holds the lower jaw forward during sleep. It is made by Panthera Dental, a Canadian medical device manufacturer, and sold only through licensed clinicians. The two sleep devices in the range are the Panthera Classic and the Panthera X3, both described by the manufacturer as D-SAD, a Digital Sleep Apnea Device. Both carry FDA 510(k) clearance for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
It looks like two thin trays, one on the upper teeth and one on the lower, connected so that the lower tray sits slightly ahead of where your jaw would naturally rest. That small forward position is the entire mechanism. Moving the jaw forward moves the base of the tongue forward, the space behind the tongue widens, air passes through it more slowly, and the tissue that was fluttering has less reason to flutter. Nothing is cut, nothing is injected, and nothing happens to your teeth or your bite during the day.
What makes the Panthera devices different from a boil and bite mouthpiece is how they are made. Each one is 3D printed by laser sintering from medical grade polyamide 12, a biocompatible nylon, with no metal and no acrylic monomer. The manufacturer lists over 350 customisation options and describes the result as among the smallest and lightest appliances available, which matters a great deal at three in the morning when you are deciding whether to keep wearing it. The advancement itself is set by your dentist and adjusted over the following weeks until the snoring settles and your jaw is comfortable.

Your Experience
What Happens When You Get a Panthera Snore Guard
Step-by-Step Process
Assessment
Dr. Applegate examines your teeth, jaw joints and airway, asks about your sleep, and screens for the signs that mean a medical sleep evaluation comes first.
Records
We take the records Panthera needs to build your device, including a bite registration that sets the starting forward position of your jaw.
Delivery
Your snore guard arrives in about eight days. We fit it, check the bite, and show you how to put it in, take it out and clean it.
Adjustment
Over the next few weeks the advancement is adjusted in small steps, until the snoring settles without your jaw complaining in the morning.
What It Treats
What a Snore Guard Helps With
Mechanical snoring, from the jaw and tongue

Tongue Base Collapse
The airway narrowing behind the tongue once the jaw falls back.
Loud Nightly Snoring
The rattling sound that reaches the next room through a closed door.
Back Sleeping Snoring
Snoring that is far worse flat on your back, where gravity does the rest.
Mouth Breathing at Night
An open, dropped jaw that leaves you with a dry throat by morning.
Partner Sleep Disruption
Quieter nights for the person who has stopped sleeping in the same room.
CPAP You Cannot Tolerate
An alternative to discuss with your sleep physician when the mask has failed.

Snore Guard vs Solea Sleep and the Other Snoring Options
A snore guard is not the only way to approach snoring, and it is not always the right one. The honest comparison is below. The short version: a snore guard works on the jaw and tongue, the Solea Sleep laser works on the soft palate, and the two address different parts of the same airway. Some patients are better suited to one, some to the other, and some do both. Diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea is a separate matter and starts with your physician.
| Option | How it works | Worn nightly | Results | Downtime | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panthera snore guard | Holds the lower jaw forward, opening the space behind the tongue | Yes | While worn, from the first weeks | None | Snoring driven by the jaw and tongue falling back |
| Solea Sleep laser | Firms the soft palate so it vibrates less | No | Builds over weeks, about 12 months | None | Snoring driven by palatal vibration |
| CPAP | Pressurised air holds the whole airway open | Yes | While worn | None | Diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, first line therapy |
| Over the counter mouthpiece | A one size tray softened at home | Yes | Variable, often abandoned | None | A short trial, not a long term answer |
| Position and lifestyle change | Sleep position, weight, alcohol timing | Ongoing habit | Variable | None | Mild, situational snoring |
Candidacy
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Snore Guard?
Honest screening first, every time
A snore guard suits adults whose snoring comes from the jaw and tongue falling back during sleep, and who have enough healthy teeth to hold an appliance.
Ideal Candidates for a Panthera Snore Guard
- Adults with simple snoring, with no diagnosed or suspected obstructive sleep apnea
- Patients whose snoring is clearly worse when they sleep on their back
- Patients with enough sound teeth, or restorations in good condition, to retain an appliance
- Adults diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea who cannot tolerate CPAP, referred by their sleep physician
- People who have already tried strips, sprays and position changes without a result
- Patients willing to wear the appliance every night and to come back for adjustment
Who Should Wait or Avoid a Snore Guard
- Anyone with suspected obstructive sleep apnea who has not had a medical sleep evaluation
- Patients with active temporomandibular joint pain, locking or significant jaw dysfunction
- Severe gum disease, loose teeth or too few teeth to hold the appliance securely
- Patients with extensive unrestored dental work, which is assessed first
- Children and adolescents, whose jaws are still growing
One limit we will not blur. A snore guard treats snoring. If you gasp, choke or stop breathing in your sleep, or you are exhausted through the day, that pattern needs a medical sleep evaluation before any appliance is made. The joint clinical practice guideline from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine is explicit that CPAP remains first line therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, and that oral appliances are prescribed by a sleep physician and fitted by a qualified dentist. We follow that order, and we will tell you plainly when the sleep study comes first.
Snore Guard Side Effects and Safety
What the first weeks are actually like
Common Side Effects
Most people need one to two weeks to get used to a snore guard. Extra saliva in the first few nights, a jaw that feels tight for the first half hour of the morning, and some tenderness in the teeth are the usual reports, and they settle as you adapt. Taking the appliance out and stretching the jaw gently on waking helps.
Less Common Reactions
Less common effects include lasting jaw joint discomfort, dry mouth, and small changes in how the teeth meet over long term wear. Bite change is the reason a snore guard is fitted and reviewed by a dentist rather than bought online. We check your bite at every follow up and adjust before a small change becomes a fixed one.
Safety, Materials and FDA Status
The Panthera Classic and Panthera X3 carry FDA 510(k) clearance for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The devices are printed from medical grade polyamide 12 with biocompatibility testing to the ISO 10993 standard and are manufactured in an ISO 13485 facility. There is no metal and no acrylic monomer, which matters for patients with a nickel or methacrylate sensitivity. Call (859) 365-3300 if the appliance becomes painful or your bite feels different in the morning.
The Applegate Difference
Why Choose Applegate MedSpa for a Panthera Snore Guard in Covington, KY
A dentist, because this one is a dental appliance
Every other service in this practice is led by our nurse practitioner. This one is not. A snore guard sits on your teeth, changes where your jaw rests and has to be reviewed against your bite, which makes it dental work, and Dr. Applegate has been doing dental work in Covington since 1993.
Fitted by a Dentist
Thirty years of clinical work in the mouth, jaw and airway.
Two Snoring Routes
The appliance and the Solea Sleep laser, so the choice fits your airway.
Your Bite Is Watched
Reviewed at every follow up, which is what an online mouthpiece cannot do.
Adjusted, Not Delivered
The forward position is dialled in over weeks until it works and it is comfortable.
Honest Screening
We say plainly when a medical sleep evaluation has to come first.
One Practice, Whole Picture
Snoring, clenching and jaw tension reviewed in the same visit.
