Why Measurement Matters

The InBody Scan Behind Every Wellness Plan

An InBody scan in Covington, KY takes less than a minute and tells you what the bathroom scale never will: how much of your weight is skeletal muscle, how much is fat, and how well hydrated you are. Patients from Kenton County, Fort Wright, Edgewood and Crescent Springs use it as the starting line for the body and wellness plans we build.

Applegate Dentistry and MedSpa is led by Dr. Barry Applegate, DMD, who has cared for patients in Covington and greater Cincinnati, OH since 1993. Your results are reviewed with Elizabeth Taylor, APRN, our nurse practitioner, so the numbers become a plan rather than a printout you take home and forget.

Beyond the Scale

What an InBody Scan Shows That Your Scale Hides

Same weight, different bodies

Weight alone is a blunt instrument. Two people in Covington can step on the same scale at 170 pounds and have completely different bodies: one carrying 28 percent body fat with strong legs, the other carrying 40 percent with very little muscle left to protect the joints. After 40, most adults quietly lose muscle every decade while gaining fat, and the scale can stay flat through the whole exchange. That is why people train hard, eat carefully, see no movement in the number, and give up.
An InBody scan separates that number into its parts. In under a minute it reports skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, body fat percentage, segmental lean mass for each arm, each leg and the trunk, visceral fat level and total body water. A flat scale reading suddenly becomes readable: four pounds of muscle gained, five pounds of fat lost. We scan before treatment, again partway through, and again at the end, so progress is measured rather than guessed at. Every medical weight loss plan at this practice starts with an InBody scan and is reviewed against another one, so you can see whether you are losing fat or losing muscle, which a bathroom scale can never tell you.

Understanding the Technology

What Is an InBody Scan?

Bioelectrical impedance, explained

An InBody scan is a bioelectrical impedance analysis of body composition. You stand on the device fully clothed with shoes and socks off, hold a handle in each hand, and stay still. A very low, safe current passes through the body and the analyzer measures how much each segment resists it.

Muscle holds water and conducts that current easily. Fat resists it. By reading resistance limb by limb, the analyzer separates your weight into skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, body water and visceral fat, then prints the result in under a minute. Published research comparing the method with DXA reports close agreement for lean mass in healthy adults.

What the Scan Reports

Six Numbers Your Scan Reports

The metrics behind your plan

Soft abstract background in magenta and plum tones suggesting measurement and data at Applegate MedSpa
  • Skeletal Muscle Mass

The muscle that moves you, tracked in pounds rather than guessed at.

  • Body Fat Percentage

Fat mass as a share of total weight, the figure weight alone hides.

  • Segmental Lean Analysis

Lean mass in each arm, each leg and the trunk, so imbalances show.

  • Visceral Fat Level

Deep abdominal fat around the organs, the type tied to metabolic risk.

  • Hydration and Body Water

Total body water and the balance inside and outside your cells.

  • Basal Metabolic Rate

Calories your body burns at rest, estimated from your lean mass.

Who Should Scan

Who Is a Good Candidate for an InBody Scan?

Almost everyone, with a few notes

A scan suits anyone who wants to know what their weight is actually made of, and it is close to essential before starting a body or wellness program. Patients exploring our wellness services in Covington almost always begin here.

Good Candidates for an InBody Scan

  • Anyone starting Emsculpt Neo body contouring who wants fat and muscle change documented rather than estimated
  • Adults over 40 watching for age-related decline, the pattern described on our stubborn fat and muscle loss page
  • Patients in a functional wellness program built around strength, mobility and recovery rather than contouring
  • People whose weight has stalled even though their clothes fit differently
  • Anyone who wants a clean baseline before changing training or nutrition

Who Should Check With a Physician First

  • Anyone with an implanted pacemaker, defibrillator or other active implanted electronic device
  • Patients who are pregnant, since impedance readings are not considered reliable
  • Anyone unable to stand unsupported for the length of the scan

A scan is a wellness measurement, not a medical diagnosis. It does not replace bloodwork, imaging or an evaluation by your physician.

Safety, Accuracy and Limits

Honest about the method

Nurse Practitioner Led Wellness

Why Choose Applegate MedSpa for an InBody Scan in Covington, KY

Measurement, not marketing

Dr. Barry Applegate, DMD founded Applegate Dentistry and MedSpa in 2024 after three decades of practice in Covington, and he brought one habit with him: measure, treat, then measure again. Our nurse practitioner Elizabeth Taylor reads every scan with you in person.

  • Measure First

Every body and wellness plan here starts from a baseline scan.

  • Same Conditions

We rescan at the same time of day so comparisons stay honest.

  • Read With You

Elizabeth walks through each number instead of handing you a sheet.

  • Tied to Treatment

Your numbers set the session count and the date we scan again.

  • Included, Not Sold

The scan comes inside your treatment plan rather than as a separate line item

  • DXA Level Agreement

Published research reports close agreement with DXA for lean mass in healthy adults

Pricing

InBody Scan Cost in Covington, KY

Included with treatment planning

We do not sell the InBody scan as a standalone item with a price on the wall. It is included with treatment planning, and the exact arrangement is confirmed at your consultation, so ask when you book.

The reason is simple. The scan exists to make your plan accurate and to show whether it worked, so it belongs inside the plan rather than beside it. When you begin a course of Emsculpt Neo or a functional wellness program, your baseline scan and your follow-up scans are part of how we run that course.

Paying for Your Treatment Plan

Treatment courses at Applegate Dentistry and MedSpa are priced per session and quoted in full before you start, with no surprise additions later.

Flexible Payment Options

We want the plan to fit your budget, not the other way around.

  • Cherry Financing - monthly payment plans with a quick approval process and options for a range of credit profiles.
  • Major credit cards - accepted for a single session or a full series.
  • HSA and FSA - health spending account funds are accepted where your plan administrator allows the treatment, so check your plan first.

Call (859) 365-3300 or ask at your consultation for current pricing on the program your scan points toward.

Common Questions

InBody Scan Questions

How long does an InBody scan take?
Under a minute. You step onto the device with shoes and socks off, hold a handle in each hand, stand still, and the analyzer reads you segment by segment. Printing the sheet and going through it together takes a few minutes more, so plan for roughly ten minutes total at our Covington office.
What does an InBody scan measure?
Skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, body fat percentage, segmental lean mass for each arm, each leg and the trunk, visceral fat level, total body water and your basal metabolic rate. Together those figures describe what your weight is made of, which total weight on its own can never tell you.
How much does an InBody scan cost in Covington, KY?
There is no separate price on our card. The scan is included with treatment planning and the arrangement is confirmed at your consultation, so ask when you book at (859) 365-3300. Treatment courses themselves are quoted per session before you start, and Cherry Financing is available if you prefer monthly payments.
Does the scan hurt?
No. Nothing breaks the skin and there is no radiation. A very low electrical current passes through your body while you stand on the plates holding the handles, and most patients feel nothing at all. You stay fully clothed for the entire scan, with only shoes and socks removed.
How should I prepare for my scan?
Come before a large meal rather than after one, skip exercise and alcohol beforehand, use the restroom first, and avoid lotion on your hands and feet. Normal clothing is fine. For repeat scans, book the same time of day so hydration is similar and the comparison between sheets stays clean.
How accurate is bioelectrical impedance?
Multi-frequency impedance agrees closely with DXA for lean mass in healthy adults in published comparisons, though any single reading shifts with hydration. That is why we care more about the change between your scans than the exact figure on one sheet, and why every scan runs under the same conditions.
How often should I repeat the scan?
Every four to six weeks during an active treatment course, then once more at the end. Body composition moves slowly, so scanning more often mostly measures hydration noise rather than real change. Patients maintaining results often rescan quarterly to catch muscle loss early instead of late.
How is this different from a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-ray and is the research reference standard, but it takes longer, costs more and is not practical to repeat every few weeks. An InBody scan uses no radiation and finishes in under a minute, which makes it the better tool for tracking change across a course of treatment.
Should I scan before Emsculpt Neo or Functional Wellness?
Before either one. Both use the same BTL device for different audiences: Emsculpt Neo is body contouring, fat reduction and muscle definition, while functional wellness targets strength, mobility and recovery. Your scan shows which conversation you are really having.
Can a scan show whether I am losing muscle with age?
It shows it clearly. Segmental lean analysis reports muscle in each arm, each leg and the trunk, so decline appears as a number instead of a feeling. That pattern is what our stubborn fat and muscle loss page describes, and it is a common reason patients over 50 scan here.
Is the InBody scan safe for everyone?
For most people, yes. It is non-invasive, radiation free and over in under a minute. Anyone with an implanted pacemaker, defibrillator or other active implanted electronic device should check with their physician first, and impedance readings are not considered reliable during pregnancy.
Do I need to be a current patient to get scanned?
No. Patients from Covington, Fort Wright, Edgewood, Crescent Springs and across Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, OH book a scan as part of a first consultation. Browse our wellness treatments, then call (859) 365-3300 and we will build the visit around what you want to measure.
